!Now Ya Know: Jhene Aiko

“!Now Ya Know” is a weekly series from Mixologi profiling artists you may not have heard of. Every week we will be selecting a new artist for you to keep on your radar.”

I’ve always been an R&B fan and with artists like Frank Ocean putting the spotlight back on that genre, more talented acts are beginning to surface from obscurity. One of those acts happens to be a young lady by the name of Jhené Aiko.

Aiko, a 24-year-old singer/songwriter from Los Angeles, has been around the industry for spell yet many might not find her recognizable. From her time working with B2K at the height of their fame (and was also singed to their former label, T.U.G./Epic), she’s appeared on various soundtracks (i.e. You Got Served, The Proud Family), worked with the likes of Kanye West and Drake on her last mixtape Sailing Soul(s) and has recently linked up with hip hop up-and-comers Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q as their go-to songstress.

With a fresh new start (she’s signed to No I.D.’s record label Artium under Def Jam), new alliances and a new album entitled Soul(ed) Out set to drop later this year, Jhene seems primed to set herself apart from the rest of today’s industry neophytes. Check out the video for her latest song, 3:16 AM. Trust me, she’s one to watch.
