!Now Ya Know: Flying Lotus

“!Now Ya Know”is a weekly series from Mixologi profiling artists you may not have heard of.  Every week we will be selecting a new artist for you to keep on your radar.

Lately, I have developed quite an eagerness to explore different types of music.   I also have a much deeper appreciation for folks that don’t develop music strictly catering to the mainstream.  What is really exciting about this time in music, is that you can now actually make a living without going pop.  With the advent of the internet, shared music, mp3 players, and much more accessibility to music making equipment, what used to be deemed “underground”, is now just actually considered some highly successful shit that you just haven’t heard about.

Enter Flying Lotus.  Who is this dude? To be honest, have no idea.   He is considered an “instrumental multi-genre laptop producer.” None of his songs have lyrics, and in a nutshell, he just makes really dope, progressive, cosmic beats, that typically take you on a journey, to lord knows where.  It is the type of music you would expect to hear when you walked into the lobby of a really trendy boutique hotel in SOHO.

What’s dope about Flying Lotus, is that his lack of lyrics actually makes his music extremely versatile: from DJing, making tracks with Erykah Badu, to doing live film scores at film festivals.  He is currently on tour for his upcoming album Until The Quiet Comes, and as promotion for that, he did the music a for really awesome short film.  Flying Lotus is your favorite producer’s favorite producer, and is getting a lot more popular by the day, so !Now Ya Know.
